What is a deed poll?
A deed poll is a legal document that proves you have changed your name. It is a binding declaration that you will give up your old name and use only your new name from the date of signing. Unenrolled deed polls are the standard method of changing your name in the UK and are accepted by the vast majority of organisations.
This free generator creates a properly worded deed poll based on the standard legal format used in England and Wales. Simply enter your details, download the PDF, sign it in front of a witness, and you can begin using it to update your records.

Print your deed poll — ideally on good quality white paper.

Choose a witness — an adult aged 18+, not a family member. A friend or colleague is ideal.
3
Sign in your new name in front of your witness. Your witness also signs and fills in their details.

Many organisations prefer a professionally printed deed poll
Your free PDF is legally valid — but some banks and government offices are more receptive to deed polls that look and feel like official documents.

Yes. An unenrolled deed poll does not need to be produced by a solicitor to be legally valid. Provided it is correctly worded, signed and witnessed, it carries full legal weight under English and Welsh law.
What is the difference between a free and paid deed poll? ▾
The legal wording is identical. The difference is presentation. A paid deed poll is printed on premium certificate paper with an embossed gold seal. Some organisations are more receptive to these. A home-printed version is technically valid but may occasionally prompt additional scrutiny.
Do I need a witness? ▾
Yes. Your deed poll must be signed in front of an independent adult witness who is not a family member. They must sign and provide their name, address and occupation. Without a witness signature the deed poll is not legally effective.
Can I use this deed poll in Scotland? ▾
This deed poll is drafted under English and Welsh law. It is widely accepted across Scotland in practice, but Scotland has its own legal system. We recommend checking with specific organisations if you are based in Scotland.
