How to change your name with HSBC UK

HSBC changes your name or title in a branch. You’ll take two kinds of proof: one showing the change itself, and one showing the name you had before.

The quick answer

Visit your nearest HSBC branch with proof of your name change and proof of your previous or other name, such as your driving licence, passport or birth certificate. After a marriage, divorce, civil partnership, adoption or bereavement there’s a set document for each. For any other reason, HSBC asks for a witnessed deed poll or a statutory declaration.

How to change your name at HSBC

Find the proof of your change

Use the table below. Each reason for a name change has its own document.

Add proof of your previous name

HSBC also wants proof of your previous or other name, such as your driving licence, passport or birth certificate.

Visit a branch

HSBC says to visit your nearest branch and it’ll update your name or title. Its branch finder shows the closest one.

HSBC’s help page only describes the branch route. It doesn’t offer a form to post or a way to do it in the app. HSBC: change your name

What HSBC asks for, reason by reason

Why your name changedProof of the change
MarriageMarriage certificate. If yours is an online certificate, bring another document in your new name as well.
Civil partnershipCivil partnership schedule
DivorceDivorce decree absolute. If it isn’t in English, it must be professionally translated.
End of a civil partnershipFinal court order
AdoptionAdoption certificate
A birth re-registeredAmended birth certificate
Death of a partnerDeath certificate and marriage certificate
Any other reasonWitnessed deed poll or statutory declaration

Whatever the reason, take the second document too: proof of your previous or other name. HSBC gives a driving licence, passport or birth certificate as examples.

Using a deed poll at HSBC

For changes outside the events in the table, HSBC asks for a witnessed deed poll. It doesn’t mention enrolment, so the key point is that your deed poll is complete: signed in your old and new names, dated, and signed by an independent witness.

Your second document shows who you were before, so it can be in your old name. A passport, driving licence or birth certificate in your previous name does that job.

Changing your name for any other reason?

HSBC asks for a witnessed deed poll or a statutory declaration. A prepared deed poll is the simpler of the two.

First Direct and the rest of your HSBC products

First Direct is part of HSBC UK, but it runs its own name change process through chat in its app or Online Banking, with a form and a list of documents it sends you. Our guide to changing your name with First Direct walks through it.

HSBC’s help page doesn’t say how long the change takes, how new cards are issued or how joint accounts are handled. Ask in branch while you’re there, so you know what to expect in the post.

Once HSBC has your new name

Your account number and sort code stay the same, so your salary, Direct Debits and standing orders keep running. What does need a nudge is anyone who pays you. Banks check the name you’re paid under through Confirmation of Payee, and Pay.UK says a personal account has to match the exact registered name. Once HSBC has your new name, someone paying you under the old one may be told it doesn’t match, so give your employer, landlord and regular payers the new name too. Pay.UK: Confirmation of Payee

Your credit file catches up as lenders report your new name. Our guide to name changes and your credit report explains how the old and new names stay linked, and the name change checklist keeps track of everyone else.
