Why use a generator instead of a blank deed poll template?
A deed poll only works if the wording is right. Generic blank templates found online are easy to fill in incorrectly — the wrong date format, a missing declaration, or wording that doesn't match the established legal format used in England and Wales can lead to a document being questioned at the counter.
This free tool builds your printable deed poll from the standard legal template, personalised with your details in the correct places. It creates an unenrolled deed poll — the type used for almost all UK name changes — for both adults and children. Print it, sign it in front of a witness, and it's legally effective from that moment.
Not sure a deed poll is what you need? Our name change FAQs cover enrolled vs unenrolled deed polls, statutory declarations, and what each organisation will accept. You can also use our free name change generator, which walks you through the process step by step.

1Print on good quality white A4 — check your ink; faint or streaky prints get questioned
2Sign with your witness (see checklist below)
3Keep the original safe — the Passport Office and DVLA ask you to post original documents, sometimes for weeks at a time
Doing it yourself? Here's what's still to do
1
Print your deed poll — good quality white paper, single-sided, black ink.
2
Choose a witness — an adult aged 18+, not a family member. A friend or colleague is ideal.
3
Sign in your new name in front of your witness — don't sign in advance. Your witness also signs and fills in their details.
4
Your deed poll is now legally effective. Start updating your records — begin with your passport or driving licence, then work through our free name change checklist.
5
Plan for originals. Organisations usually want to see an original signed document, not a photocopy — and some hold onto it while they process your change. If you'd rather not wait for one document to do the rounds, our printed service includes optional certified copies.
💡 Worth knowing before you print
Get it accepted first time, everywhere
Your free deed poll is legally valid. But your original will be posted, handled and stamped by banks and government offices — and the Passport Office and DVLA in particular prefer a quality printed original that survives the journey. A deed poll on certificate paper with an embossed seal gets waved through; a sheet of home-printed A4 sometimes invites questions.
Good to know: The legal wording is identical to your free version. What you're paying for is presentation and convenience: certificate paper, an embossed seal, and a document that arrives within days looking the part — no printer required.

Yes — provided the wording is correct. A deed poll doesn't need to be produced by a solicitor or bought from anyone. What matters is that it uses the established legal wording, and that you sign it in front of an independent adult witness. This generator uses the standard format recognised under English and Welsh law.
What wording must a deed poll contain? ▾
A valid deed poll declares that you absolutely renounce your former name, will use your new name at all times, and require everyone to address you by your new name only. It must state both names in full, be dated, signed in both your old and new names, and witnessed. Our generator handles all of this automatically.
Can I just print it on normal paper at home? ▾
Yes. A home-printed deed poll on plain white A4 is legally valid once signed and witnessed. Good quality paper helps it survive repeated handling. Some organisations are more receptive to deed polls printed on certificate paper with a seal, which is why we also offer a professionally printed version.
Do I need a witness? ▾
Yes. Your deed poll must be signed in front of an independent adult witness who is not a family member — a friend, colleague or neighbour is ideal. They sign it too and add their name, address and occupation. Without a witness signature the deed poll is not legally effective.
Is there a separate template for a child's deed poll? ▾
Yes — a child deed poll uses different wording because it's made and signed by those with parental responsibility on the child's behalf. Select "Child deed poll" above and the generator will produce the correct format, including space for one or two parents or guardians to sign. Read more in our child name change guide.
What's the difference between an unenrolled and enrolled deed poll? ▾
This template produces an unenrolled deed poll — signed and witnessed privately, and the way most UK name changes are done. An enrolled deed poll is additionally registered with the Royal Courts of Justice for a fee, placing your name change on public record. Enrolment is rarely needed — our enrolled vs unenrolled guide explains why. If you require it, see the gov.uk guidance if you require it.
Can I use this deed poll in Scotland? ▾
The template is drafted under English and Welsh law. It is widely accepted across Scotland in practice, but Scotland has its own legal system, so check with specific organisations if you're based there.
Important: This generator produces unenrolled deed polls under English and Welsh law. We are an independent document provider and are not affiliated with HM Government. For complex situations we recommend seeking legal advice.
