The quick answer

Fill in Skipton’s change of name form, which covers savings and mortgage accounts, and return it to a branch or post it to Principal Office, The Bailey, Skipton, North Yorkshire BD23 1DN. Include your former and new signatures and original or certified copies of your proof, such as a marriage certificate, decree absolute or deed poll. Where you provide a simple deed poll, Skipton asks for identification with your previous signature. It can’t accept internet printouts.

Originals or certified copies only. Skipton says it can’t accept internet printouts. Copies must be certified with the words “I confirm that I have seen the original document”, and the certifier signs, prints their full name and adds their profession, company address, phone number and the date. Skipton’s branch colleagues will be happy to certify documents for you.

Using a deed poll with Skipton

Skipton’s form says: “Where a simple deed poll certificate is provided, we require identification with your previous signature.” It adds that this can also be certified by a solicitor, and that you can provide any document from List A of its Proving Your Identity leaflet instead, which includes a current UK passport and a UK photocard driving licence.

So if you’re using an unenrolled deed poll, take ID that carries your previous signature, or ask at the branch which option suits you. Skipton’s colleagues can certify copies there.

Make sure your deed poll is complete: signed in your old and new names, dated, and signed by an independent witness. Our guide to originals, certified copies and photocopies explains what certified means.

Good to know before you send it

1

Both signatures

Your former signature and your new one, in the boxes on the form.

2

Originals or certified copies

No internet printouts.

3

ID for a simple deed poll

Identification with your previous signature.

Skipton says it keeps a record of the ID you provide, which means keeping a copy of your documents. If you have financial advice through Skipton, its Financial Advice Service has to forward original documents to the relevant providers, which may take some time.

Once Skipton has your new name

Your account numbers stay the same, so your savings and mortgage carry on as before. If you pay into your savings from another bank, the payment may be checked against the name Skipton holds through Confirmation of Payee, and Pay.UK says a personal account has to match the exact registered name. Once the change is made, use your new name for those payments, and give it to anyone else who pays into the account. Pay.UK: Confirmation of Payee

Your credit file catches up as lenders report your new name. Our guide to name changes and your credit report explains how the old and new names stay linked, and the name change checklist keeps track of everyone else.
