How to change your name with Virgin Money

Virgin Money has a different route for each product. Current and savings accounts are changed in a branch, credit cards by post, and mortgages with their own form. If you bank with Nationwide too, that’s another request.

The quick answer

For a current or savings account, Virgin Money says you’ll need to visit your nearest branch with proof of your name change, such as a marriage certificate. Its change of name form asks to see your marriage certificate, decree absolute or deed poll, plus your birth or marriage certificate as evidence of your previous name. Credit cards and mortgages are changed separately by post, and Virgin Money says you need to notify each product on its own.

Each Virgin Money product has its own route

The documents Virgin Money asks for

For current and savings accounts, the change of name and address form says Virgin Money needs to see your marriage certificate, decree absolute or deed poll as evidence of your name change, and your birth certificate or marriage certificate as evidence of your previous name. Every signatory on the account has to sign it, or the form could be returned. Virgin Money: change of name and/or address form (VM38232V4)

For a mortgage, Virgin Money has a separate change of name form, and it sets out what it needs for each situation. Virgin Money: mortgage change of name form (VMP161V5)

Your situationWhat the mortgage form asks for
Recent marriageOriginal marriage certificate, or a copy certified by a professional
Recent divorce, going back to a previous nameOriginal birth certificate or deed poll, or a copy certified by a professional
Deed pollOriginal deed poll, or a copy certified by a professional

For a credit card, Virgin Money asks for a certified copy of the legal document confirming the change, such as a marriage certificate or deed poll. Virgin Money: credit card personal details

Using a deed poll with Virgin Money

All three Virgin Money routes accept a deed poll: the current and savings account form, the credit card team and the mortgage form. None of them says it has to be enrolled.

What differs is the version they want. The credit card team asks for a certified copy, and the mortgage form takes the original or a copy certified by a professional. Our guide to originals, certified copies and photocopies explains the difference.

In a branch, take the original. Virgin Money’s form also mentions sending the document in instead, and says Virgin Money will send it back, but it doesn’t give a postal address for current and savings accounts. Ask Virgin Money before you post anything.

Several Virgin Money products?

Each one needs its own request, and some want the original. Extra signed originals of your deed poll mean you’re not waiting for one to come back.

Virgin Money, Nationwide and joint accounts

Changing your name with Virgin Money doesn’t update Nationwide. Virgin Money’s credit card page says that if you also have an account with Nationwide, you’ll need to update it there separately, and Nationwide says the same about Virgin Money. See our guide to changing your name with Nationwide.

On a joint current or savings account, the change of name form has to be signed by all the signatories registered on the account, and the address of the first named account holder is used for all correspondence.

Once Virgin Money has your new name

Your account number and sort code stay the same, so your salary, Direct Debits and standing orders keep running. What does need a nudge is anyone who pays you. Banks check the name you’re paid under through Confirmation of Payee, and Pay.UK says a personal account has to match the exact registered name. Once Virgin Money has your new name, someone paying you under the old one may be told it doesn’t match, so give your employer, landlord and regular payers the new name too. Pay.UK: Confirmation of Payee

Your credit file catches up as lenders report your new name. Our guide to name changes and your credit report explains how the old and new names stay linked, and the name change checklist keeps track of everyone else.
