How to change your name with Barclays

Barclays changes the name on your accounts, cards and statements in a branch, so you’ll need your original documents with you. Barclaycard, mortgages and currency accounts each have their own route.

The quick answer

Visit a Barclays branch with your original documents. Barclays says you’ll need to go into a branch to change your name on your accounts, bank cards and statements, and it accepts a marriage certificate, decree absolute, civil partnership registration, deed poll or statutory declaration. A deed poll doesn’t need a solicitor, but it must be signed by you and your signature independently witnessed. Barclaycard, Barclays mortgages and currency accounts are updated separately.

Taking a deed poll to Barclays

Barclays’ guidance doesn’t mention enrolment at all. What it sets out is how the deed poll must be signed: by you, as the person named on it, with your signature independently witnessed. It also says the witness doesn’t need to be a solicitor.

So the details that matter are on the page itself. Check your deed poll is signed and dated, and that your witness has added their signature, name and address. Our guide to who can witness a deed poll explains what “independent” means in practice.

If your bank is the main reason you’re changing your name, our main bank guide covers what to do if any bank queries your documents.

Taking a deed poll into Barclays?

Barclays asks for the original in branch. A prepared, printed deed poll gives you a clean original to take with you.

Barclaycard, mortgages and Tesco Bank

A branch visit covers your Barclays accounts, bank cards and statements. Barclays lists some products with their own contact routes: Barclaycard (online, or 0800 151 0900), mortgages (0800 022 4022) and currency accounts (0345 975 7575). Its page lists contacts for its insurance and investment products as well.

Tesco Bank is part of the Barclays Group, but Tesco Bank says it won’t share your new name with Barclays automatically. If you bank with both, update each one. See our guide to changing your name with Tesco Bank.

Once Barclays has your new name

Your account number and sort code stay the same, so your salary, Direct Debits and standing orders keep running. What does need a nudge is anyone who pays you. Banks check the name you’re paid under through Confirmation of Payee, and Pay.UK says a personal account has to match the exact registered name. Once Barclays has your new name, someone paying you under the old one may be told it doesn’t match, so give your employer, landlord and regular payers the new name too. Pay.UK: Confirmation of Payee

Your credit file catches up as lenders report your new name. Our guide to name changes and your credit report explains how the old and new names stay linked, and the name change checklist keeps track of everyone else.
