The quick answer

Write to Tesco Bank with your account or card number, confirmation that you want to change your name, your new and old signatures, and an original or certified copy of your proof. A deed poll can be the original or a certified copy. A marriage certificate must be the original issued on the day or a certified copy from the registrar, and a decree absolute must be the original. Tesco Bank says it can take up to 10 working days to process your request and return your documents.

How to change your name with Tesco Bank

Tesco Bank says that to update the name on your accounts, you need to send your request in writing. Your letter should include:

Your account or card number

So Tesco Bank can find your accounts.

Confirmation that you want to change your name

Say clearly that you want to change your name, and what to.

Your new and old signatures

Sign in both names.

Proof of your name change

An original document or certified copy, depending on the document. See the table below.

Using a deed poll with Tesco Bank

A deed poll is the most flexible document on Tesco Bank’s list, because it accepts the original or a certified copy. Its help page doesn’t say the deed poll has to be enrolled.

If you send the original, Tesco Bank returns it, but that can take up to 10 working days. If you need your deed poll elsewhere in the meantime, send a certified copy or use an extra signed original. Our guide to originals, certified copies and photocopies explains the difference.

Check the deed poll is complete first: signed in your old and new names, dated, and signed by a witness.

Posting an original to Tesco Bank?

It can take up to 10 working days to come back. Extra signed originals of your deed poll keep everything else moving in the meantime.

Tesco Bank and Barclays

Tesco Bank is now part of the Barclays Group, but it says it won’t automatically share your new name with Barclays. If you bank with both, tell each of them.

Barclays changes the name on its accounts, bank cards and statements in a branch, with your original documents. See our guide to changing your name with Barclays.

Once Tesco Bank has your new name

Your account number and sort code stay the same, so your salary, Direct Debits and standing orders keep running. What does need a nudge is anyone who pays you. Banks check the name you’re paid under through Confirmation of Payee, and Pay.UK says a personal account has to match the exact registered name. Once Tesco Bank has your new name, someone paying you under the old one may be told it doesn’t match, so give your employer, landlord and regular payers the new name too. Pay.UK: Confirmation of Payee

Your credit file catches up as lenders report your new name. Our guide to name changes and your credit report explains how the old and new names stay linked, and the name change checklist keeps track of everyone else.
