The quick answer

Tell your insurer when your name changes and follow its amendment process. Updating your driving licence does not replace this step. Ask what evidence is needed, whether there is an administration charge and when the revised policy documents will be available.

Contact the insurer before waiting for renewal

Admiral, for example, lists a change to your name among circumstances it needs to be told about immediately, including changes affecting named drivers. Other insurers’ procedures can differ, so use your own policy wording. Admiral: changes you must tell your insurer about

A quick message now is better than waiting for the replacement licence and discovering later that the policy should already have been updated. Explain which supporting documents are available and which are being processed.

Have these details ready

  • Policy number and vehicle registration.
  • Current policy name and full new name.
  • Date of the change and a brief description of the evidence available.
  • Whether the change affects the policyholder, a named driver or both.
  • Any separate changes to address, occupation, vehicle use or other insured details.

Ask for a secure upload or the insurer’s approved route for documents. Do not send a passport or deed poll to an address copied from an unverified message. You may be asked for a marriage certificate, deed poll or another form of evidence; the insurer decides its requirements.

The DVLA driving-licence page expressly identifies the V5C as a separate update. DVLA: changing your name on a driving licence

Use our driving licence guide alongside this page. A name update should identify the same person correctly; do not accidentally submit a change of vehicle keeper when the keeper has not changed.

Fees, premiums and no-claims evidence

Ask the insurer to separate any administration charge from any change in the premium. If you are also moving home or changing vehicle use, those changes may be assessed separately. Do not assume that every insurer makes a name amendment free, or that a name change must increase the premium.

If your no-claims evidence shows your former name, ask the new insurer how to demonstrate that the record belongs to you. Keep the evidence linking the names and ask the former insurer whether it can reissue the confirmation. There is no need to describe yourself as a different driver.

Keep your records consistent

Use your signed deed poll as the link between your old and new names when updating your insurance and other accounts.

Check the result, not just the request

Submit the change using the insurer’s stated route.

Ask when the amendment takes effect and whether you need to do anything while it is processed.

Download the revised certificate and schedule when available.

Check spelling, vehicle registration, drivers, cover and renewal details.

Keep the confirmation with your name-change records and check the next renewal invitation.

If you already have an open claim, tell the claims team as well and quote its reference. A changed customer profile may not automatically update every conversation or document associated with the claim.

Frequently asked questions

Do not rely on that. Notify the insurer directly using its policy amendment process.

Do not make that assumption, but do not ignore inaccurate details. Contact the insurer promptly and ask it to confirm the position under your policy.

Ask the insurer which evidence it will accept while the licence is being updated.

Ask the policyholder or insurer how the named-driver details must be amended.
