Practical UK name-change guide

How to change your name with Chase UK

Chase changes your legal name through chat in its app. Its list of documents includes an enrolled deed poll but not an unenrolled one, so if yours is unenrolled, update your passport or driving licence first.

The quick answer

In the Chase app, go to Profile, then Personal details, and tap Edit next to your name. Chase takes you to chat, where you upload one or more documents using the paper clip icon. Its list includes a marriage or civil partnership certificate, a driving licence, a valid signed passport and a deed poll stamped as enrolled by the High Court. An unenrolled deed poll isn’t on the list, so update your driving licence or passport first and send that instead.

Chase and unenrolled deed polls

The only deed poll on Chase’s list is one “stamped as enrolled by the High Court”. An unenrolled deed poll isn’t mentioned.

That doesn’t leave you stuck. Chase also lists a driving licence and a valid signed passport, and your deed poll is what you use to get those updated. Changing the name on a GB driving licence is free. Our driving licence guide covers DVLA, and our passport guide covers HM Passport Office.

Enrolling your deed poll is the other option, but it means a court fee and your change going on public record. Our guide to enrolled and unenrolled deed polls weighs it up.

Your card, and Chase’s chosen name option

Chase says it’ll send you a new card once it’s updated your details. If you haven’t used your physical card in the last 6 months, it won’t send a new one automatically.

Not ready to change your legal name? Chase lets you set a chosen name, which it uses to address you in the app and in calls and messages. Search ‘preferred name’ in the Support section of the app, then choose Call us or Message us. Chase says statements and certain documents still use your legal name. Chase UK: update my chosen name

Once Chase has your new name

Your account number and sort code stay the same, so your salary, Direct Debits and standing orders keep running. What does need a nudge is anyone who pays you. Banks check the name you’re paid under through Confirmation of Payee, and Pay.UK says a personal account has to match the exact registered name. Once Chase has your new name, someone paying you under the old one may be told it doesn’t match, so give your employer, landlord and regular payers the new name too. Pay.UK: Confirmation of Payee

Your credit file catches up as lenders report your new name. Our guide to name changes and your credit report explains how the old and new names stay linked, and the name change checklist keeps track of everyone else.
