How to change your name with Coventry Building Society

Coventry says the easiest way is a branch visit, where it can update your details there and then. You can also post its change of name form. Either way, check its rules on deed polls, ID and certified copies first.

The quick answer

Take your documents into a Coventry Building Society branch and it can verify the change and update your details there and then. Or post its change of name form, with original documents or certified copies, to FREEPOST CBS CUSTOMER SERVICE, written exactly like that. A non-enrolled deed poll needs ID in your new name, such as a passport or photocard driving licence. Coventry won’t accept a passport or licence on its own as proof of the change, or documents printed off the internet.

Two ways to tell Coventry

RouteWhat happens
In a branchCoventry says this is the easiest way. Bring your documents and it can verify the change and update your details there and then.
By postFill in the change of name form and send it with your supporting documents to FREEPOST CBS CUSTOMER SERVICE. Write it exactly like that, in capital letters, all on one line. You don’t need a stamp, and Royal Mail delivers Freepost as second class.

The form covers mortgage and savings accounts, and asks whether the change is for a Junior ISA. It also prints a return address of Oakfield House, PO Box 600, Binley, Coventry CV3 9YR. Coventry Building Society: changing your details Coventry Building Society: change of name form

The documents Coventry accepts

DocumentCoventry’s condition
Marriage certificate or civil partnership documentAccepted
Enrolled deed pollCoventry’s help page says no ID is needed, but its change of name form asks for ID in your new name, so take some anyway
Non-enrolled deed pollID in your new name is required
Statutory declaration of change of nameOnly if it was drawn up by a solicitor
Decree absolute, final order or civil partnership dissolution documentAccepted
Going back to your maiden nameYour birth certificate or marriage certificate, with a signed letter and your decree absolute or a deed poll
Adoption deedAccepted
Re-issued birth certificateUnder 18s only

What Coventry won’t accept. A passport or driving licence on its own isn’t proof of a name change, because Coventry says it doesn’t show the link between your old and new names. It also won’t take documents printed off the internet or photographs of documents.

Deed polls, ID and certified copies at Coventry

For a non-enrolled deed poll, Coventry needs ID in your new name. Its form lists Group A ID such as a passport, a UK photocard driving licence, a full old-style paper driving licence or a DWP pension entitlement letter.

Its help page says an enrolled deed poll needs no ID, but the December 2025 form asks for Group A ID with either kind. Taking ID in your new name avoids any doubt. The order that works is deed poll, then driving licence or passport, then Coventry. Changing the name on a GB driving licence is free; see our driving licence guide.

Posting copies instead of originals? Coventry accepts certified copies dated within the last 12 months, with the words “I confirm that I have seen the original document”. The person certifying must be someone like a legal professional, accountant, medical professional, Post Office official or bank or building society manager. They mustn’t be related to you, and you can’t certify your own.

Deed poll, then ID, then Coventry

Coventry wants ID in your new name with a non-enrolled deed poll. A prepared deed poll gets the first step right.

Cash cards, title changes and children’s accounts

Coventry automatically re-issues any cash cards for your accounts when you change your name with it. Only changing your title, say from Mrs to Ms? Coventry says that doesn’t need documents.

For a child’s account, the form must be signed by the adult named on the account. If the child is over 7 and the account has been signed over to them, they sign it themselves.

Married abroad? Call 0800 121 8899 or ask at a branch, and Coventry will explain what it can accept.

Once Coventry has your new name

Your account numbers stay the same, so your savings and mortgage carry on as before. If you pay into your savings from another bank, the payment may be checked against the name Coventry holds through Confirmation of Payee, and Pay.UK says a personal account has to match the exact registered name. Once the change is made, use your new name for those payments, and give it to anyone else who pays into the account. Pay.UK: Confirmation of Payee

Your credit file catches up as lenders report your new name. Our guide to name changes and your credit report explains how the old and new names stay linked, and the name change checklist keeps track of everyone else.
