The quick answer

Send an original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, decree absolute or deed poll, with examples of your old and new signatures, to The Co-operative Bank, PO Box 4931, Swindon, SN4 4PL. If you’d rather not post your documents, take them into your local branch. The bank updates your name, confirms it in writing and returns your evidence, usually within 7 to 10 working days. For a mortgage, use its change of name form.

How to change your name with The Co-operative Bank

Choose your proof

An original or certified copy of your marriage certificate, decree absolute or deed poll.

Add your signatures

Include examples of your old signature and your new one.

Post it, or take it in

Send everything to The Co-operative Bank, PO Box 4931, Swindon, SN4 4PL. If you don’t want to post your documents, take them into your local branch.

Look out for the letter

The bank updates your name and confirms it in writing. It says this usually takes 7 to 10 working days.

The bank’s app, Online Banking and phone options are for contact details such as your address, phone number and email. Its help page doesn’t offer them for a name change. The Co-operative Bank: update your contact details

What to send The Co-operative Bank

What to includeVersion the bank accepts
Marriage certificateOriginal or certified copy
Decree absoluteOriginal or certified copy
Deed pollOriginal or certified copy
Examples of your old and new signaturesNeeded with any of the above

If your proof is something else, such as a civil partnership certificate or a statutory declaration, the bank’s page doesn’t mention it, so check with the bank before you send it.

Your evidence comes back. The Co-operative Bank says it’ll return any supporting evidence you’ve provided. If you’re posting an original, it’s still worth using a tracked service.

Using a deed poll with The Co-operative Bank

The Co-operative Bank lists a deed poll as proof of a name change and doesn’t say it has to be enrolled. It takes the original or a certified copy.

Its page doesn’t say who can certify a copy. If you’d rather not ask, take the original into a branch, or post the original, since the bank says it returns your evidence.

Either way, make sure the deed poll is complete before you send it: signed in your old and new names, dated, and signed by a witness. Our guide to who can witness a deed poll covers who to ask.

Not changing your name because of marriage or divorce?

The Co-operative Bank’s list is short: a marriage certificate, a decree absolute or a deed poll. For any other reason, it’s the deed poll.

Changing the name on a Co-operative Bank mortgage

Your mortgage has its own process. The Co-operative Bank says you can change the name on your mortgage account by completing and submitting its change of name form, which is on the same help page.

Our mortgage guide covers what else to think about, such as keeping the property’s title in step. If you also have savings or a mortgage with Coventry Building Society, see our guide to changing your name with Coventry Building Society.

Once The Co-operative Bank has your new name

Your account number and sort code stay the same, so your salary, Direct Debits and standing orders keep running. What does need a nudge is anyone who pays you. Banks check the name you’re paid under through Confirmation of Payee, and Pay.UK says a personal account has to match the exact registered name. Once The Co-operative Bank has your new name, someone paying you under the old one may be told it doesn’t match, so give your employer, landlord and regular payers the new name too. Pay.UK: Confirmation of Payee

Your credit file catches up as lenders report your new name. Our guide to name changes and your credit report explains how the old and new names stay linked, and the name change checklist keeps track of everyone else.
