The quick answer

In the Monzo app, tap Help, search ‘Changing your name’ and tap Get in touch at the bottom of the article. Monzo says you’ll need a valid ID document that confirms your new name: a driving licence or passport issued after your name change, a marriage certificate, or a deed poll. That updates your legal name on your Monzo account, bank card and statements.

What Monzo accepts

DocumentMonzo’s condition
Driving licenceIssued after your name change, so it shows your new name
PassportIssued after your name change, so it shows your new name
Marriage certificateListed with no extra condition
Deed pollListed with no extra condition

Monzo says you need one valid document that confirms your new name. Its help pages list these four and don’t mention a statutory declaration or divorce papers, so ask in the chat if that’s your proof.

Using a deed poll with Monzo

Monzo lists a deed poll alongside a marriage certificate and new photo ID, and its help pages don’t add conditions such as enrolment. Make sure yours is complete before you send it: signed in your old and new names, dated, and signed by an independent witness.

You’ll be sending it through the chat, so take a clear photo or scan where both names, the date, your signatures and your witness’s details can all be read.

Prefer to use photo ID? Monzo accepts a driving licence or passport issued after your name change, and changing the name on a GB driving licence is free. See our driving licence guide. If Monzo asks for something you don’t have, our guide to what to do if a bank won’t accept your deed poll sets out your options.

No passport or licence in your new name yet?

Monzo also lists a marriage certificate and a deed poll. A prepared deed poll gets you there without waiting for new ID.

Legal name or preferred name?

Monzo treats these separately. Your legal name is the one on your Monzo account, bank card and statements, and changing it needs one of the documents above. Monzo has a separate help article on changing your preferred name.

Monzo’s help pages don’t cover joint accounts or how long the change takes, so ask in the chat if you need to know.

Once Monzo has your new name

Your account number and sort code stay the same, so your salary, Direct Debits and standing orders keep running. What does need a nudge is anyone who pays you. Banks check the name you’re paid under through Confirmation of Payee, and Pay.UK says a personal account has to match the exact registered name. Once Monzo has your new name, someone paying you under the old one may be told it doesn’t match, so give your employer, landlord and regular payers the new name too. Pay.UK: Confirmation of Payee

Your credit file catches up as lenders report your new name. Our guide to name changes and your credit report explains how the old and new names stay linked, and the name change checklist keeps track of everyone else.
