The quick answer

Yorkshire Building Society accepts one of these to change your name: a marriage or civil partnership certificate, a driving licence, a passport, an enrolled deed poll, an unenrolled deed poll with a driving licence or passport showing your new name, or a statutory declaration signed by a solicitor or notary. A divorce or the end of a civil partnership needs two pieces of ID. YBS doesn’t publish a step-by-step route online, so call 0345 1200 100 to ask how to send them.

How to tell Yorkshire Building Society

YBS’s terms say you must tell it straight away about changes to your personal information, like your name. Its website doesn’t set out a step-by-step route for a name change, though.

Its security page says you can update your address, email address and phone numbers online, and that for any other personal or security details you should call 0345 1200 100. Its savings terms give the opening hours as 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturday. Yorkshire Building Society: security Yorkshire Building Society: general terms and conditions

When you call, ask whether to take your documents into a branch or post them, and whether it wants originals or certified copies. The leaflet that lists the documents doesn’t say.

Using an unenrolled deed poll with YBS

YBS accepts an unenrolled deed poll as long as it comes with a driving licence or passport showing your new name. On its own, it won’t be enough.

YBS also lists a driving licence or passport as a document in its own right. Either way, your deed poll is what gets that ID updated in the first place.

Changing the name on a GB driving licence is free, and our driving licence guide covers what DVLA needs. Our guide to enrolled and unenrolled deed polls explains what enrolment involves.

Deed poll, then ID, then YBS

YBS wants a driving licence or passport in your new name with an unenrolled deed poll. A prepared deed poll gets the first step right.

Before you call YBS

1

Your document

One from the list above, or two pieces of ID after a divorce.

2

New-name ID

A driving licence or passport, if you’re using an unenrolled deed poll.

3

The number

0345 1200 100, 9am to 5pm on weekdays and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.

YBS lists Chelsea Building Society and Norwich & Peterborough as its trading names. If your account is with one of those, ask on the call whether anything differs.

Once YBS has your new name

Your account numbers stay the same, so your savings and mortgage carry on as before. If you pay into your savings from another bank, the payment may be checked against the name YBS holds through Confirmation of Payee, and Pay.UK says a personal account has to match the exact registered name. Once the change is made, use your new name for those payments, and give it to anyone else who pays into the account. Pay.UK: Confirmation of Payee

Your credit file catches up as lenders report your new name. Our guide to name changes and your credit report explains how the old and new names stay linked, and the name change checklist keeps track of everyone else.
