What is the difference between a free and paid deed poll? ▾
The legal wording is identical. The difference is presentation. A paid deed poll is printed on premium certificate paper with an embossed gold seal. Some organisations are more receptive to these. A home-printed version is technically valid but may occasionally prompt additional scrutiny.
Do I need a witness? ▾
Yes. Your deed poll must be signed in front of an independent adult witness who is not a family member. They must sign and provide their name, address and occupation. Without a witness signature the deed poll is not legally effective.

Deed poll or statutory declaration — which do I need? ▾
A deed poll is the standard document for changing your name in the UK and is what almost every organisation asks for. A statutory declaration of name change is an older alternative that must be sworn before a solicitor or commissioner for oaths, usually for a fee. Unless an organisation has specifically asked you for a statutory declaration, a deed poll is the simpler and more widely accepted route. Can I use this to change my name after marriage or divorce? ▾
Yes. Many organisations accept a marriage certificate for a straightforward surname change, but a deed poll is useful if you want a double-barrelled surname, a change of first name, or one universally accepted document.
