The quick answer

If you hold a British and a foreign passport, plan both updates before applying. The usual rule is to align the foreign passport with the name requested on the British one. Where that cannot reasonably be done, HM Passport Office has an exceptions process, but approval is not automatic.

Start with the authority that issues your other passport

Ask your foreign embassy or consulate how it recognises a UK deed poll and whether it needs a translation, legalisation or another document. Confirm those requirements before arranging the foreign passport update.

  • Will it recognise a UK deed poll, or require a local registration or court process?
  • Must a national identity card or civil register be updated before the passport?
  • Are there restrictions on first names, surnames, transliteration or name order?
  • Which documents need translation, certification or legalisation?
  • Can the process be completed from the UK, and will it retain your passport?

Get the answers in writing where possible. The useful evidence is the authority’s actual position, rather than a forum report about someone else’s application.

Understand the usual order and the exceptions

The public passport guidance normally directs dual nationals to update their non-British passport first. GOV.UK: passport name changes

The detailed alignment policy also covers restrictions imposed by another country, particular naming conventions, an update already in progress, and circumstances assessed under administrative fairness. Evidence of an application in progress must identify the name expected on the new document. An observation may be added to the British passport in some cases. Build one consistent evidence file

Write your current and intended full name exactly as each authority records it.

Include accents, spaces and the order of names.

Keep the evidence linking each former name to the next.

A missing earlier change can matter as much as the latest deed.

Record which authority currently holds each original document.

Avoid starting two processes that need the same passport at the same time.

Apply through the appropriate official passport route, declaring all passports and nationalities requested on the form.

Check the resulting documents before arranging travel or using them to update other records.

If an authority proposes a different spelling, ask the other passport authority how it will treat that difference before proceeding. Do not assume that a translation or an “also known as” entry solves every mismatch.

If you are not a British citizen

Holding two non-British nationalities is a different case. You need the rules of both issuing states, plus any UK immigration record updates that apply. This guide does not turn residence in the UK into eligibility for a British passport.

For people with UK immigration status, check the UKVI account update instructions. A name update at a bank or employer does not establish that an immigration account has changed.

One name, a clear paper trail

Once you have agreed the name and the order of your passport updates, we can prepare the deed poll that records your UK name change.

Travel while the records are changing

Create a trip checklist showing which passport will be used at each stage, the ticket name and any visa or travel authorisation. Ask the relevant authorities about entry and return requirements where two passports are involved. Do not make a non-refundable booking on the assumption that the two applications will finish together.

For the general travel sequence, use our before-going-abroad guide. If the problem is a ticket already booked, start with the airline or travel agent.

Frequently asked questions

Only if the foreign authority accepts it under its own rules. Confirm those rules with the embassy or consulate.

Alignment is the normal expectation for a British passport application, but HM Passport Office recognises specified exceptions and naming conventions.

No. Give complete and accurate information about the passports and nationalities the application asks you to declare.

Do not treat a name-change application as a nationality decision. Ask the relevant country about any nationality consequences before changing its records.
