How to change your name with Bank of Scotland

Bank of Scotland uses the Lloyds Banking Group process: Online Banking, a branch or the post. It also lists the Scottish documents it accepts, which matters because you can’t enrol a deed poll in Scotland.

The quick answer

Log in to Online Banking and select Your profile, Change your contact details, then Change name. Or complete and print the right form, then take it to a branch or post it to Bank of Scotland, The Green Building, Kirkstall Road, Leeds, LS78 1LB. You’ll need your driving licence or a UK or EU passport, your old and new signatures, and a document showing the change. An unenrolled deed poll is only accepted with a valid driving licence or UK or EU passport in your new name.

Deed polls and Scottish name changes

Bank of Scotland accepts an enrolled deed poll, but points out that enrolment isn’t available in Scotland. An unenrolled deed poll is accepted too, as long as you also have a valid driving licence or UK or EU passport in your new name.

So for most people the easiest order is deed poll, then driving licence, then the bank. Changing the name on a GB driving licence is free, and our driving licence guide covers what DVLA needs.

If you were born or adopted in Scotland, Bank of Scotland also accepts a copy of the entry in the Register of Corrections, or an amended birth certificate from the Registrar General in Edinburgh. Our guide to changing your name in Scotland explains who can use that route.

Deed poll first, then your licence

Bank of Scotland wants new-name photo ID with an unenrolled deed poll. A prepared deed poll gets that first step right.

One request for the whole Lloyds Banking Group

Bank of Scotland says that when you contact it, it’ll update your name on all your Lloyds Banking Group accounts, including Halifax, Lloyds, MBNA and Lloyds Bank Private Banking.

Insurance is the exception. Bank of Scotland says not all the insurance policies it sells are managed by it, so it won’t update your name on them. Check each policy for the insurer’s contact details.

See also our guides for Lloyds Bank and Halifax, which follow the same process.

Once Bank of Scotland has your new name

Your account number and sort code stay the same, so your salary, Direct Debits and standing orders keep running. What does need a nudge is anyone who pays you. Banks check the name you’re paid under through Confirmation of Payee, and Pay.UK says a personal account has to match the exact registered name. Once Bank of Scotland has your new name, someone paying you under the old one may be told it doesn’t match, so give your employer, landlord and regular payers the new name too. Pay.UK: Confirmation of Payee

Your credit file catches up as lenders report your new name. Our guide to name changes and your credit report explains how the old and new names stay linked, and the name change checklist keeps track of everyone else.
