Signatures and ID. Halifax needs both your old and new signatures, and either your driving licence or a UK or EU passport. It accepts originals or certified copies, sends originals back once the change is made, and returns certified copies only if you ask.

Unenrolled deed polls at Halifax

Halifax won’t take an unenrolled deed poll on its own. It needs to see a valid driving licence or UK or EU passport that already carries your new name.

So update your photo ID before you go to Halifax. Changing the name on a GB driving licence is free, and our driving licence guide covers what DVLA asks for. With the new licence and your deed poll together, you’ve met Halifax’s condition.

Enrolling your deed poll is another route Halifax accepts, but it costs a court fee and makes your change public. Our guide to enrolled and unenrolled deed polls weighs it up.

Deed poll, licence, then Halifax

Halifax needs new-name photo ID with an unenrolled deed poll. A prepared deed poll gets the first step done properly.

Your other Lloyds Banking Group accounts and insurance

Halifax says that when you contact it, it’ll update your name on all your Lloyds Banking Group accounts. That includes accounts with Lloyds, Bank of Scotland, MBNA and Lloyds Bank Private Banking.

Insurance needs a separate look. Halifax says not all the insurance policies it sells are managed by Halifax, and that it could affect your policy if you don’t update it. Check each policy for the insurer’s contact details.

Once Halifax has your new name

Your account number and sort code stay the same, so your salary, Direct Debits and standing orders keep running. What does need a nudge is anyone who pays you. Banks check the name you’re paid under through Confirmation of Payee, and Pay.UK says a personal account has to match the exact registered name. Once Halifax has your new name, someone paying you under the old one may be told it doesn’t match, so give your employer, landlord and regular payers the new name too. Pay.UK: Confirmation of Payee

Your credit file catches up as lenders report your new name. Our guide to name changes and your credit report explains how the old and new names stay linked, and the name change checklist keeps track of everyone else.
