The quick answer

Updating your driving licence does not update your V5C log book. Send DVLA a separate keeper-name amendment, using the correct section for your version of the V5C. For a personal change by deed poll, include the name-change evidence and an explanatory letter.

Why your licence and log book need separate updates

Your driving licence identifies you as a driver. The V5C records the vehicle’s registered keeper. Even when both records belong to you and both are handled by DVLA, changing one does not complete the other. DVLA expressly requires a separate V5C update when your name changes. DVLA: changing your name on a driving licence

Treat each vehicle as its own task. If your household has two cars registered in your former name, check both log books. If a leasing company holds the V5C, ask it how to update the keeper information rather than completing paperwork you do not hold.

Which section of the V5C should you complete?

Your log bookWhat to completeWhere to send it
New style, with coloured numbered blocksWrite the full new name in section 3.Send the whole V5C to the address in section 3.
Older style, without those blocksUse section 6, then sign as required. Do not tick “new keeper”.Send the whole V5C to the address in section 8.

Use full names rather than initials. Include a letter explaining the change. A name-only amendment is usually free. DVLA: change your name on your V5C; DVLA: change your name and address together

When do you need to send your deed poll?

DVLA lists a deed poll as proof for a legal name change. Its V5C guidance makes specific exceptions for changes following marriage or divorce, and correction of a spelling error: those cases do not require name-change proof under that page’s instructions. Explain the actual reason accurately. DVLA: change your name on your V5C

For a chosen first name, a new family surname or another personal change recorded by deed poll, keep the names on the deed, covering letter and V5C consistent. Where you have changed names more than once, prepare the links from the keeper name currently shown to the name you now use.

A posting checklist for your V5C

Check whether this is a name-only change or a combined name-and-address change.

Identify the V5C version and complete the appropriate section.

Keep a reference copy of the details.

Add a short letter with the vehicle registration, former name, new name and reason for the change.

Enclose the evidence required for your circumstances.

If you are unsure about the document format, confirm it with DVLA before posting.

Use the address printed in the relevant V5C section.

Keep the licence application in its own correctly addressed envelope.

Check the replacement log book and separately tell your insurer and finance provider.

Do not assume the driving-licence evidence rules are a substitute for the V5C instructions. Our guide to originals and copies explains why the document type matters.

Ready for your DVLA updates

Get your deed poll prepared before updating your vehicle records. Additional signed originals can help when separate organisations need your evidence.

Tax due soon, missing documents and delays

If vehicle tax is due within four weeks, DVLA says to tax the vehicle before posting the V5C, or use a Post Office offering vehicle tax to deal with the details and tax together. Check the required MOT evidence. If the log book is lost, the name-change route uses V62, an explanatory letter and a £25 replacement fee. DVLA: change your name on your V5C

DVLA says a replacement can take up to six weeks, but asks you to contact it after four weeks if it has not arrived. Record your posting date and follow up rather than allowing the request to drift. These are DVLA timeframes, separate from preparation and delivery of your deed poll.

Frequently asked questions

No. Submit a separate V5C name amendment for each affected vehicle.

A personal name change does not mean a different person has become the keeper. Use the name-amendment instructions rather than the vehicle-transfer process.

Use separate correctly addressed applications. They are separate processes with their own document instructions.

DVLA’s name-change guidance says no proof is needed to correct a name spelt incorrectly on the log book. Include the explanatory letter.
