The quick answer

If you are applying for a DBS check, follow the form’s instructions about previous names so the check can be completed. Transgender applicants who need to protect information that could reveal a previous gender identity can contact the DBS Sensitive Applications Team before submitting. The confidential route is specific to eligible applicants and does not remove the need for accurate checking.

Ordinary DBS checks and previous names

A name change does not erase a person’s identity history for a criminal-record check. The application process asks for information needed to identify records. If your name changed, follow the exact instructions for the check type and provide supporting documents through the approved route. Ask the registered body or employer which records it needs to see, and who will see them.

Do not leave out a former name based on a general website’s advice. An incomplete history can delay identity checks. A deed poll helps link names for routine identity records, but it does not instruct the DBS to omit information from a check.

When the DBS Sensitive Applications Team may help

DBS offers a confidential sensitive-applications route for transgender applicants who do not want previous gender or name information disclosed on their DBS certificate. GOV.UK says it is available for Basic, Standard and Enhanced DBS checks. Contact the dedicated team before submitting the application so it can explain the process and evidence required. DBS: sensitive applications for transgender applicants

The DBS team explains eligibility and how to submit the sensitive details securely. Eligibility and disclosure protections relate to revealing a previous gender identity; criminal-record information required by law is not removed.

Contact details and preparation

The published DBS contact is 0300 131 2784 or [email protected]. Confirm the current contact details on GOV.UK before using them. If you are comfortable with previous identity information appearing on the certificate, GOV.UK says you do not need to contact the team and can enter the names in the “any other names” section. DBS: sensitive applications for transgender applicants

Before you call or write, have the type of check, the application stage and your concern ready. You can ask how previous names should be provided and what the employer or countersignatory will see. Do not include sensitive personal details in an ordinary email to an employer when the dedicated process may be more appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

Only eligible transgender applicants can use the DBS confidential sensitive-applications route for previous name or gender information that could reveal a previous gender identity. Contact the team before applying.

No. It is about protecting specified previous-identity information from disclosure on the certificate. It does not remove relevant criminal-record information.

Disclosure Scotland is a separate service with its own guidance for transgender and non-binary applicants.

Follow the application instructions and ask the registered body or relevant disclosure service what name-linking evidence it needs.
