When can you start using your new name?
Straight away. A deed poll takes effect on the date it’s signed, and GOV.UK says you can use your signed deed poll straight away as proof of your new name. There’s no court to wait for and nobody has to approve it. GOV.UK: make an unenrolled deed poll
The National Archives points out that it’s always been possible to change your name without registering the change, so nothing stands between signing your deed poll and using your new name. The National Archives: changes of name
The deed poll is what gets organisations to update their records in your new name, so the day you sign it you can:
- Tell your employer and ask payroll to update your records. See changing your name at work.
- Update HMRC online or in the HMRC app. See HMRC and National Insurance.
- Post your driving licence and passport applications.
- Start using your new name with friends, family, your GP and everyone else.
The one thing to wait for is travel. Book flights in the name on the passport you’ll travel with, because GOV.UK says not to book travel until you have a valid passport. Our guide to booking a flight before your new passport arrives explains. GOV.UK: changing your passport information
