The quick answer

Most people do not need to register an ordinary name change with the police. Different requirements can apply if you are subject to offender notification rules, supervision or a specific order. If that applies, contact your supervising officer before changing or using a new name, rather than relying on a general deed poll checklist.

Separate an ordinary name change from a specific duty

CircumstancePractical action
Ordinary personal or marriage name changeThere is no general police registration step in the normal process.
Offender notification requirementsSpeak to your supervising police officer before acting and follow the applicable rules.
Probation, bail or court orderAsk the responsible officer or solicitor what your specific conditions require.
Old immigration police registration instructionThe former visa police registration scheme has ended; check UKVI updates separately.
Police-issued licence or an active caseAsk the relevant licensing or case team whether its records need updating.

A criminal record and an ongoing notification requirement are not interchangeable concepts. Do not assume that every person with a past conviction follows the same process.

Registered offenders: contact the police before the change

The general GOV.UK deed poll page states that registered sex, violent and terrorist offenders must notify the police within three days of a name change. GOV.UK: changing your name by deed poll

There is an important 2026 development: the Home Office’s Crime and Policing Act factsheet describes advance name-change notification and a power to require police approval for changes on specified identity documents. It also refers to the existing three-day rule. The factsheet alone does not establish when each provision applies in every jurisdiction. If you are affected, do not treat “three days afterwards” as a safe universal deadline. Ask the supervising officer or solicitor to confirm the operative requirements, any advance notice and any approval needed before you sign, use a new name or apply for identification. This guide does not confirm commencement of each 2026 provision.

What to ask your supervising officer

  • Which notification rules or order apply to me?
  • Must I give notice before using the name, and how much notice?
  • Do aliases or online names need to be reported?
  • Do I need approval before a passport, driving licence or immigration-document application?
  • Where and how must I notify you, and what evidence should I bring?
  • How will receipt of the notification be recorded?

Keep the reply and the record of any notification. Make any required police notification directly through the process your supervising officer confirms.

The old visa police registration scheme has ended

The immigration police registration scheme ended on 4 August 2022. GOV.UK says people no longer need to register even if they were previously instructed to do so. That is separate from offender requirements. GOV.UK: end of visa police registration

If you have immigration status, use the current UKVI account guidance to check which details must be updated. An old police registration certificate is not a substitute for keeping the relevant immigration record accurate.

Make your name change clear

Our printed service prepares the document recording your chosen name, with instructions to help you complete the signing correctly.

If you are uncertain or have already changed your name

Contact the officer or solicitor responsible for your case promptly and explain the facts accurately, including when you signed the document and when you first used the name. Do not alter dates or omit earlier names to make the paperwork look simpler.

If you are simply making an ordinary name change without any such requirements, concentrate on the organisations that hold your records, using the name-change checklist. You do not need to create a police notification solely because a template contains wording about people who are required to notify.

Frequently asked questions

No. Ordinary name changes are different from cases involving specific notification requirements, restrictions or orders.

Do not assume so. Any personal notification or approval requirement must be dealt with through the appropriate police process.

The former visa police registration scheme has ended. Check your current UKVI account obligations separately.

Not as a universal rule. If you are subject to offender requirements, confirm the currently applicable rules with your supervising officer before acting, including the effect of the 2026 changes.
