Quick answer

Is a deed poll proof of identity?

Not on its own. A deed poll proves you’ve changed your name, not who you are, so it won’t replace a passport or driving licence. What it does is make your existing ID work with your new name: at the bank, for a new job, on a DBS check and even at the polling station. Then it gets you new photo ID in your new name.

The quick answer

A deed poll isn’t proof of identity. GOV.UK describes it as a legal document that proves a change of name. It has no photo, and the DBS doesn’t list it as an identity document, so it won’t stand in for a passport or driving licence.

It’s the link that makes your other ID work. Show it with ID in your old name, and banks, employers, the DBS and polling stations can see you’re the same person. Then use it to get a passport and driving licence in your new name. Ours is £14.95, posted free, with extra copies so you can do both at once.

GOV.UK says a deed poll is a legal document that proves a change of name. Where your deed poll does the job

Voting

At the polling station

If your photo ID is in your old name, GOV.UK says you can take a document that proves you’ve changed your name, or re-register in your new one. GOV.UK: photo ID you’ll need to vote

Work

Right to work checks

The Home Office asks employers to check the reasons for different names across your documents, such as a deed poll, and to keep a copy. Home Office: right to work checklist

DBS

DBS checks

You list every name you’ve used, and your deed poll shows a recent change, alongside the identity documents the DBS asks for.

Banks

Your bank

Banks use your deed poll as proof of your name change. Some also want photo ID in your new name, so update your licence or passport first if yours does.

Keeping your deed poll safe

Because it links your old and new names, your deed poll is worth looking after. Keep the original with your birth certificate, and send originals only to organisations that need them, such as the DVLA and HM Passport Office. Some banks are happy with an upload.
