Quick answer

Does a deed poll expire?

No. A deed poll has no expiry date, and the name change it records lasts for life, or until you change your name again. What can trip you up is the paperwork around it: a copy that’s lost or worn out, or proof of your name in use that’s too old.

The quick answer

A deed poll doesn’t expire. Once it’s signed and witnessed, it proves your change of name for good, whether you signed it last week or 30 years ago. HM Passport Office’s caseworker guidance lists what makes a deed poll acceptable, and age isn’t on the list.

Two things around it do go out of date. Proof that you use your new name, such as a bank statement or a utility bill, often has to be recent, and the Passport Office wants many of those issued in the last 12 months. And a deed poll that’s lost or falling apart needs replacing. Our customers can order more copies, and a new deed poll is £14.95, posted free.

Why a deed poll doesn’t expire

A deed poll is a deed: a formal declaration that you’ve given up your old name and will use your new one from the date you signed it. Nothing in it runs out. HM Passport Office accepts an unenrolled deed poll that’s signed in your old and new names, witnessed, signed in ink, dated and made at the time, with no limit on how old it is. Enrolled deed polls are permanent public records. The National Archives holds enrolled deed polls going back more than a century. The National Archives: changes of name

When an old deed poll needs back-up

An old deed poll is still the link between your names. What changes over the years is how much else an organisation wants to see. HM Passport Office asks for evidence that you use your new name, and documents such as a utility bill, a bank statement or a letter from a government department must have been issued in the last 12 months. HM Passport Office: evidence to change a name

If your name has changed more than once, every step needs proof. The Passport Office says that without evidence made at the time for each link, you’ll need a statutory declaration covering every name you’ve used. Our guide to several name changes helps you map each step.

If your deed poll is worn, lost or laminated

Organisations can turn away a deed poll they can’t read, or one that’s been taped, written on or laminated. The DVLA says it won’t accept laminated certificates or photocopies. GOV.UK: change the name on your driving licence

When an old deed poll stops being the whole story

A deed poll covers the change it records. If you change your name again later, by marriage, divorce or another deed poll, your current name comes from that change, and you show both documents so organisations can follow each step.

Going back to an earlier name is a change too. Our guide to changing your name back explains when you need a new deed poll for it.

Frequently asked questions

No. There’s nothing to renew. Your deed poll stays valid for as long as you use the name it gave you.

Yes. Age doesn’t affect a deed poll, and HM Passport Office’s guidance sets no age limit. It may ask for recent proof that you use the name as well.

No. Enrolment creates a permanent public record, and the deed poll stays valid like any other.

It may refuse one it can’t read, or one that’s been laminated or damaged, and some want recent proof that you use the name too. A fresh copy solves the first, and a recent bank statement usually solves the second.

No. Each extra copy is signed and witnessed like your original, so it lasts just as long.

Your deed poll still proves the change it records. Show it with the document for your later change, such as a marriage certificate, so organisations can follow every step.
